Dear SPS middle school parents:
Welcome to the 2007-2008 sports year at St. Peter Prince of The Apostles School (SPS). We hope you will read carefully this brochure, which describes our pro-gram, its mission and the philosophy that will guide coaches working with our student-athletes.
At SPS, our children will learn how to compete in a Catholic atmosphere that fos-ters good sportsmanship and team spirit. As student-athletes, they will learn how to balance the academic demands of school with the challenges of playing sports. The skills they master on the playing field or court will help them in the classroom. The values they absorb as members of a school team will guide them inside and outside the classroom.
Middle school sports teams serve as the bridge between participation leagues like CYO and more competitive high school programs. SPS coaches will work with each child to hone the skills needed to compete. Ability, academics, team com-mitment, including attendance at practice, and behavior in the classroom will affect time on the court or field. However, no child is guaranteed playing time.
Parents are integral to the success of our sports program as they reinforce the les-sons taught by coaches and join us as volunteers and fans. We look forward to a fantastic sports year.

Participation Guidelines
SPS athletes are expected to attend all team practices unless they are absent from school. Generally, school teams will begin practice immediately after school Monday through Thursday.
Students must have an overall average of 70 or better in all subjects and no grade less than 70 to participate, must comply with all discipline policies, and model Tiger Spirit values at all times. Coaches use the eligibility list printed each Monday from the RenWeb system for determining eligibility for the week. Academically ineligible students may continue to practice at the discretion of the coach.
Student-athletes who have been suspended may not practice or compete during their suspension. Athletes sent to detention may not compete until they complete their detention. Students with persistent disci-pline problems may be dismissed from a team.
Eighth-grade students must compete on A teams. Sixth- and seventh-grade students may compete at the A or B level. Archdiocesan Interscholastic League rules prohibit students on school soccer, volley-ball or basketball teams from competing with any other team in the same sport during the same season.
Parents with questions about any SPS athletic policies should contact the Athletic Director. The Athletic Director supervises the sports program, working with an Athletic Committee of parent volunteers. Parents are asked to earn service hours working in the concession stand, helping with gym maintenance or assisting with other sports-related projects throughout the year. Sports information, including game schedules, is also available at www.stpeterprince.org.
Physicals
All student-athletes must have a physical dated within a year of the end of the season for the sport they will play. The SPS sports program will offer physicals for $15 at the school in August. Students also may
obtain physicals from their personal
physicians if they prefer.

FEES
Cross-country and track fees are each $60 per student. Fees for all other sports are each $80 per student. The sports fees cover the costs of uniforms, equipment, game officials, league fees, coaches stipends, bus maintenance, fuel, and facility maintenance. Because SPS has no home field for outdoor sports, some costs
also are associated with obtaining practice and playing fields. The athletic program is financed by your fees and the fees are the primary funding source. The athletic pro-gram is not part of the general school budget.
All sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are welcome to try out for SPS sports teams. Families who cannot afford the sports fees are eligible for sports scholarships and should contact the Athletic Director for information. Regis-tration opens when practice begins.
St. Peter Student-Athlete Agreement
Registration Form
I have read the SPS sports brochure and understand and support the programs rules and philosophy. I know that participation in the program is a privilege and that the student-athlete represents our school and team. I also know that the student-athlete may be removed from the team for academic or disciplinary reasons as out-lined in this brochure.
I will demonstrate good sportsmanship and Catholic values as a student-athlete, parent and fan throughout the sports season, as I represent St. Peter Prince of the Apostles School.
